Why Does My Shampoo Look Slightly Different From Bottle to Bottle?

One of the questions I’ve been asked recently is why some bottles of Velvet Root shampoo are a lighter amber color while others are darker.
It’s a fair question.
After all, when we’re used to buying products from large manufacturers, we expect every bottle to look exactly the same.
But Velvet Root Botanicals isn’t made with synthetic dyes designed to create a uniform appearance.
The color comes naturally from the ingredients themselves.
Why Does the Color Vary?
One of the signature ingredients in Velvet Root shampoo is marshmallow root.
Before each batch is made, marshmallow root is steeped to create an herbal infusion.
Just like tea, coffee, or any other botanical infusion, the final color can vary slightly from batch to batch.
Several factors can influence the color, including:
The natural variation of the harvested roots
How much natural plant material is released during steeping
As a result, some batches may appear lighter amber while others appear darker amber.
Does a Darker Color Mean It’s Stronger?
Not necessarily.
The color of a botanical infusion doesn’t always indicate the amount of beneficial compounds present.
Just as two cups of tea can vary slightly in color while still tasting great, two batches of marshmallow root infusion can vary in appearance while still meeting the same formulation standards.
Has the Formula Changed?
No.
A difference in color does not mean the formula has changed.
The same ingredients are used in every batch.
The variation comes from the natural characteristics of the botanical ingredients themselves.
Why I Chose Clear Bottles
One design choice I made intentionally was using clear bottles.
Many companies package their products in opaque containers, which means customers never see the product itself. I wanted something different for Velvet Root Botanicals. I wanted customers to see exactly what they’re getting.
For me, transparency isn’t just about ingredients, it’s about the entire product. From the ingredient list on the label to the natural color of the shampoo inside, I believe customers should be able to see what’s in the bottle they’re bringing home.
Using clear bottles means you’ll notice the natural variations that come with real botanical ingredients, but that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make. I’d rather showcase the product as it truly is than hide it behind packaging designed to create the illusion of perfect uniformity.
That commitment to transparency is part of what Velvet Root Botanicals is all about.
Why I Don’t Use Synthetic Dyes
Many large-scale products use artificial colorants to ensure every bottle looks identical.
I chose not to take that approach to avoid unnecessary ingredients.
When you work with real botanical ingredients, slight variations are normal.
To me, that’s part of the beauty of plant-based products.
Nature doesn’t produce identical leaves, flowers, roots, or herbs.
And sometimes that means a shampoo made with those ingredients won’t look identical from batch to batch either.
Final Thoughts
If your bottle of Velvet Root shampoo looks slightly lighter or darker than your previous bottle, there’s no need for concern.
It’s simply a reflection of the natural variation that comes from working with real botanical ingredients.
In fact, I’d be more concerned if every batch looked perfectly identical despite being made from plants.
Sometimes a little variation is a reminder that nature is involved.
