The Secret Ingredient Amost No One is Talking About

Walk down the hair care aisle and you'll see ingredients like keratin, biotin, argan oil, coconut oil, collagen, and castor oil. Some have been around for years, while others seem to become the newest trend overnight. Every bottle promises healthier, shinier, stronger hair.
But the ingredient that completely changed my hair wasn't any of them.
In fact, before I started Velvet Root Botanicals, I had never even heard of it.
It was marshmallow root.
It All Started with a TikTok
Like most people, I was mindlessly scrolling through TikTok one day when I came across a short video of someone holding a shampoo bar made with marshmallow root.
That was it.
I don't remember who posted it. I don't remember what they said. I don't even remember what the bar looked like. I only remember seeing the words **marshmallow root** and thinking, *"I've never heard of that before."*
A few days later, I decided I wanted to watch the video again. I searched. I searched again. I searched for days.
I never found it.
Looking back, that's probably one of the luckiest things that has ever happened to me.
Curiosity Took Over
Since I couldn't find the video, I decided to figure it out myself.
I started researching marshmallow root and quickly learned that when it's steeped in water, it releases naturally occurring plant compounds called mucilage. Mucilage gives the infusion its silky, slippery texture and is one of the reasons marshmallow root has become popular among people who enjoy botanical hair care.
At that point, I wasn't trying to start a business. I wasn't planning a product line. I wasn't even trying to make shampoo.
Honestly, I thought my conditioner was the problem.
I wanted hair that felt soft, manageable, and healthy without feeling heavy or coated. Instead of trying to recreate the shampoo bar I'd seen on TikTok, I decided to teach myself how to make a traditional liquid conditioner.
The First Conditioner I Ever Made
People are usually surprised when I tell them this.
The marshmallow root conditioner wasn't my tenth formula.
It wasn't my fifth.
It was the **very first conditioner I had ever made.**
I had never formulated a cosmetic product before.
The original recipe was incredibly simple. It contained marshmallow root, BTMS-50, and lemongrass essential oil. There was no panthenol, no sodium lactate, and none of the ingredients that eventually became part of today's formula.
I washed my hair, rinsed it out, and just stood there.
I couldn't believe what I had made.
My hair felt softer than it had in years. It brushed effortlessly, felt incredibly smooth, and somehow managed to feel light instead of heavy.
I remember thinking, **"I have something here."**
I didn't know it at the time, but that little bowl of homemade conditioner would eventually become the foundation of Velvet Root Botanicals.
Could that first conditioner be improved?
Absolutely.
Over the following months I continued researching, testing, and refining the formula. I added ingredients that made it even better, and today's conditioner is the result of countless hours of experimentation.
But here's the part I'll never forget.
Before any of those improvements...
Before the additional ingredients...
Before Velvet Root Botanicals even existed...
**I loved that very first batch.**
That's when I realized I might be onto something.
Then I Discovered the Real Problem
For a while, I thought I had solved everything.
Then I started noticing something.
Every time I washed my hair with a store-bought shampoo, even expensive salon brands, my hair still didn't feel quite right before I ever reached for my conditioner. It felt heavier than I wanted. Almost coated.
At first, I assumed I just hadn't found the right shampoo.
So I bought another one.
Then another.
Then another.
No matter how much money I spent, I kept coming back to the same conclusion.
Maybe the shampoo was part of the problem too.
That realization sent me right back to the drawing board.
I started researching cleansing ingredients, learning about surfactants, and teaching myself how to formulate shampoo the same way I had taught myself to formulate conditioner. Some batches were better than others. Some taught me exactly what *not* to do.
Eventually, I created a shampoo that gave me the same feeling I'd experienced with that very first conditioner.
Clean.
Soft.
Light.
That was the missing piece.
Why Marshmallow Root?
People often ask me why I use marshmallow root.
The scientific answer is that marshmallow root contains naturally occurring mucilage, which creates a silky infusion and can contribute slip to a well-formulated hair care product.
But that's not really why I use it.
I use it because it's the ingredient that started this entire journey.
Every time I prepare a fresh marshmallow root infusion, I'm reminded of one random TikTok video that disappeared before I ever had the chance to watch it again.
Looking Back
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had found that video.
Maybe I would have learned how to make a shampoo bar.
Maybe I would have copied someone else's recipe.
Maybe Velvet Root Botanicals would never have existed.
Instead, I had to figure everything out for myself.
I researched.
I experimented.
I failed.
I learned.
I kept going.
Looking back, losing that TikTok was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
One random video introduced me to an ingredient I had never heard of. That one moment eventually became the foundation of every bottle of Velvet Root Shampoo and Conditioner I make today.
Sometimes the biggest changes in our lives begin with the smallest moments.
